The underated genius which was Richard Weisbrod was born in Switzerland into a wealthy and long-established silk manufacturing family, .He settled near Preston in Lancashire in 1932 and as a self taught artist, he became a central and key figure in the emerging Manchester art scene of the post-war years. He was friends with L.S.Lowry and Theodore Major amongst others.
A fantastic watercolour of Pendle by Richard Weisbrod.
Richard Weisbrod is mentioned numerous times in the seminal book A Northern School revisited by Peter Davies.
By 1974 Chapman was selling for as much as fellow-Lancastrian L. S. Lowry and topping £1,000 per picture. She appeared on Television and had books written about her work. Her free flowing style has been compared to Renoir. I think Margaret Chapman is a massively underrated northern artist and well worth investment!
Sue Atkinson is another amazing artist who worked in a distinct colourful and naive style. In her lifetime she won many awards for her work including Yorkshire artist of the year and the Royal Watercolour Society Saunders Waterford Award. She did many of her paintings near Whitby at Runswick Bay. Her prices are rising rapidly so if you like her work please buy them now.
